Yesterday I got the chance to stop by a local car meet and was limited to just an iphone camera. It has been a while since I visited without my Canon DSLR... I felt like I would not be able to capture as great high definition shots that I would be able to really enjoy. So of course there was better than average cards at the event... that's how it happens right? So this beauty above was parked and was the first car that stood out. For this shot, I squatted down and waited for people to get out of the way... So the below are some ways you can still capture great photos without a high end DSLR.
1. Go for composition and angles
With an iphone it's hard to get a shot from a far because of the lens capabilities. So how do you get around that? you get the angle nobody expected. The above was taken right from above the car, I edited this shot in Photoshop using a simple HD Filter, but would still enjoy this shot unedited. Go for composition and placement of the subject.
2. get close to the subject
no, even closer. ;)
The great thing about having a camera on the iphone is that it's compact, literally flat so you can get close to the subject, in this case this rear emblem. Again, show what someone isn't expecting and you will be able to get a great shot.
3. go beyond the shot, tell a story.
You will want to make the viewer wonder. for the above, you wonder, who else is due to arrive to park next to these three BMWs the last car wasn't part, but still made it look busier and provided question marks. All red, but one makes the viewer thing this is a group. The iphone camera provides great depth and allows you to get close or have some distance.

I hope these tips have helped you with taking better automotive photography with your iphone or smart phone. Practice more of placement and get close and you will truly see an improvement in your shots.
